Doki Doki Takeover: Bad Ending is a spin-off mod to the original Doki Doki Takeover developed by Team TBD, based off Team Salvato's 2017 horror game, Doki Doki Literature Club.[4] It utilizes the Psych Engine v0.5.1, and has more darker horror elements than its predecessor. 3 Hard-only, and 1 spin-off song await as the club spirals into glitchy madness.

Plot[]

The mod takes place in an alternate timeline of Doki Doki Takeover, shortly after Yuri's act.

After Boyfriend confronted Yuri in the song Obsession, all of the club members, along with Girlfriend and the game "DDLC" itself, become corrupted due to Monika's absence. Monika, in the vaccum between Hating Simulator and DDLC, notices it, and tries to return to the game "Doki Doki Literature Club," where she was created. However, the access is denied due to data corruption, and Boyfriend is forced to sing with the other corrupted club members while the club spirals into glitchy madness until the game cannot stand the lack of "Monika.chr" any longer.

In the end, all of the girls, including Girlfriend, end up dying from the various glitches, and Boyfriend, in that scene, witnesses it in tears, and the entire game is terminated. After that, DDLC is removed, and so is everyone else, leaving Monika forever trapped in that vacuum between Hating Simulator and Doki Doki Literature Club to suffer from corruption.

Characters[]

Sayori[]

But a poem is never actually finished. It just stops moving.
― Sayori's final poem, %, Doki Doki Literature Club

Sayori is the first opponent of Bad Ending with the song, Stagnant. During the absence of Monika, Sayori got some kind of control of DDLC and tries to fix the game.[5] But, during her data corruption, she progressively becomes more depressed throughout the song, eventually devolving into madness.[6]

Appearance[]

During the beginning portions of "Stagnant," Sayori retains her original appearance from Doki Doki Takeover. After some corruption occurs, both characters are transported to the "space room," and Sayori appears kneeling down with blue, empty eyes and a dead expression. She also wears tattered-looking pajamas, consisting of a brown collared white dress shirt, which has a pocket on each side, brown folds and black buttons with a portion of the collar underneath her shoulder, red shorts and no shoes. She also has red-markings on her neck, along with blood on her fingers, referencing her death. During the poem-segments of Stagnant, Sayori appears as a sketch in a notebook with a insane smile, white and bloody eyes, and a noose around her neck in her "down" pose.

Trivia[]

  • Sayori's sketch form is a reference to a special poem from the main game, albeit with more detailing.
  • The name of the song, Stagnant, is a reference to something Yuri quotes in the base game about stagnating air being a common "foreshadowing" that something terrible is about to happen, notably a couple days before Sayori's death.
  • There is 1 note in Stagnant's FL Studio file at 1:38, which reads "And left me with this hellish Epiphany...". The notes there replicate the same amount of syllables, which can imply that is what she is saying.
  • Sayori's depressed expression resembles her suicide sprite in the original DDLC.
  • At the 2:31-2:53 mark, "STAGNANT" contains a motif to "Ohayou Sayori!" from the original DDLC soundtrack.
  • Sayori and Natsuki are the only characters in the game to lack visible death animations. Both of them died at the end of HOME with the other girls, while Yuri died during Markov, and Girlfriend died during HOME.

Gallery[]

  • As the FANDOM/FANDOM-Bot site does not allow the sprite of Sayori hanged, here is the link to the image.

Yuri[]

But if it feels so good... Then why does it feel more and more like something horrible is going to happen?
― Yuri, Doki Doki Literature Club

Want to learn more about Yuri?

Yuri is the second opponent of Bad Ending with the song, Markov.

Appearance[]

During the opening portion of of "Markov," Yuri appears as a black silhouette with a red outline, with one wide open purple eye staring directly at the player. Yuri retains her appearance from "Obsession" in Doki Doki Takeover. In the final part of Markov, Yuri has a knife to her neck and is visibly bleeding from the mouth, with a gaping wound on her chest, before collapsing.

Trivia[]

  • Much like TGT Sonic's forced smile idle, Twilight Sparkle's transforming idle, and Faceless Natsuki's idle, Yuri's up close idle with the knife goes unused due to the constant stream of notes.
  • Markov contains motifs to original DDLC theme 'Your Reality', and "Obsession" from the original DDTO. In the old, unused version of Markov, it has both aforementioned motifs, along with another leitmotif of original DDLC theme "Poem Panic!".[7]
  • Yuri's death scene is almost a one-to-one recreation of the scene from the original Doki Doki Literature Club game, with her eyes rolling up before collapsing as she grins. The on-point stabbing herself in the game references the death scene from the original game.
  • The name of her song, Markov, is a reference to the book she reads in both acts of the game, Portrait of Markov. The book's contents change dramatically from a fiction novel (in Act 1) to an incredibly disturbing plot. (In Act 2)
  • Yuri's up-close poses resemble her obsessive poses, but, obviously, up-close. However, her up pose and right pose seem to be swapped.
  • Some of Yuri's up-close sprites reference sprites in the original games.
    • Her right up-close pose is a reference to a glitch she has in the original game, where a part of her face is obscured by parts of her sprite.
      • This is also referenced in her obsessed losing icon, BF's left miss pose when not sad or crazy, and GF's speaker in Markov and HOME.
    • Yuri is the only character to retain her microphone throughout the song.
    • Her left up-close pose references an unused facial expression for Yuri where she looks "angry" with obsessive eyes (in DDLC's files, the expression is called "y7").
    • Her up up-close pose references an another one of her obsessive faces, specifically the one where she is stabbing herself.
      • This is also shown with her icon.
  • Yuri's silhouette animation seems to be more smooth than the original version. This can possibly mean that is an updated version of her sprites for Doki Doki Takeover.

Natsuki[]

Do you hate me? Do you want to make me go home crying? The club is the only place I feel safe. Don't ruin that for me. Don't ruin it. Please.
― Natsuki, Doki Doki Literature Club, Act 2

Natsuki is the third opponent of Bad Ending with the song, HOME.

Appearance[]

During the opening portion of "HOME," Natsuki, Boyfriend and Girlfriend appear as silhouettes of their original appearances. After the corruption escalates, they are transported to the "space room" and she appears completely faceless for a short time before her eyes burst out of their sockets. She then appears to have her eyesockets shadowed out by a mass of black glitches while bleeding from said eyesockets with blood on her fingers, with a wide sinister smile and the ability to bend her neck back, a reference to her "Play With Me" scene in the original DDLC. She also shakes uncontrollably, implying her insanity. In the final portion of HOME, Natsuki and the other characters appear as white silhouettes, then they turn red almost at the end of the portion before the game crashes. After Natsuki and the other girls die from data corruption at the end of HOME, her facial features are replaced with a mass of black glitches while blood runs down her eyesockets.

Trivia[]

  • If the player writes two poems that Natsuki hates in Act 2, Natsuki's eyes have a chance to burst out of their sockets. This is referenced during the transition in HOME.
  • The name of her song, HOME, is a reference to her not liking home due to her father: her father is extremely strict in Act 1, to being physically abusive in Act 2.
  • There are 8 notes in HOME's FL Studio file. At 0:37, "SIKE, THAT'S THE WRONG NUMBER". At 0:58, "LET'S GOOOOOOOO". At 1:18, "studies show everyone loves halftime". At 1:37, "obligatory your reality reference". At 1:56, ""Key change! We got a key change!" -Acai, 2020". At 2:15, "Maximum Fuckery". At 2:30, "HEY MATT". At 2:56, "sad tone reflects the depression over abuse".
  • To reflect the difficulty of HOME more, FL Studio shows "FC This Since Epiphany Is "Easy" Fucker" on BF's track at 2:15.
  • Natsuki being faceless is a reference to her in-game sprite where Natsuki appears faceless due to glitches in Act 2 after Natsuki gives the protagonist her “poem”.
    • Along with this, Natsuki’s crazy appearance in general is a reference to her “Play With Me” scene in DDLC.
    • In addition, after Natsuki dies from her data corruption at the end of HOME, Natsuki's facial features are replaced with a mass of black glitches while blood runs down her eyesockets, referencing the same sprite during her “Play With Me” scene in DDLC before her neck snaps.
  • A few of Natsuki's poses are references to her sprites in-game.
    • Her crazy down pose is a reference to a special sprite in Act 2 where she vomits upon discovering Yuri's dead body.
    • Her crazy right pose is a reference to her "death" scene, where her neck snaps and she runs toward the player's screen.
      • This is also referenced as she comes very close to Boyfriend, very quickly, when she first turns crazy in HOME.
  • Natsuki's hair is slightly frizzed in her "crazy" sprites, unlike her "sad" or "normal" sprites.
  • The song "HOME" contains motifs to 'Your Reality' and 'Play With Me' from the original DDLC. [8]
  • Strangely, in the DDTO Bad Ending FLA files, Crazy Natsuki's face isn't animated and is instead considered as only one frame.
  • HOME has an "Easy" variation in the files (home-easy.json), however it isn't a "nerfed" variation. Instead, it has an extremely fast approach speed and has most notes on the left button. It is presumably a troll for anyone who wanted to try loading it up. [9]
  • The camera movement is broken in the "Easy" version of HOME, and the camera is only controlled by the manual event triggers.

Gallery[]

Boyfriend is the main playable character of the Friday Night Funkin' series, and is the protagonist of Bad Ending.

Appearance[]

During the beginning portions of "Stagnant," Boyfriend’s appearance is the same as in the original Doki Doki Takeover. After some corruption occurs, both characters are transported to the "space room," and Boyfriend is slightly desaturated, and has a sad expression on his face, with his head down. During the “Poem” segments of Stagnant, Boyfriend appears as a sketch on a notebook, and his appearance looks similar to Sayori’s. This makes Boyfriend look moreover insane, with blood on his shirt. He also has a mark on his eye similar to his original shirt’s symbol. After Girlfriend dies in HOME, Boyfriend goes insane with his hands bloodied and his eyes shadowed by a mass of black glitches. He is also visibly crying with a twisted grin, gripping onto his shirt tightly, as alluded to in portions of "Stagnant."

Trivia[]

  • When Boyfriend goes insane, his poses are the same as seen in the "poem" segments of Stagnant and HOME.
  • Boyfriend's head from his "poem" design is seen in the "Funky Thoughts" Easter egg in the original DDTO.
  • Boyfriend is the only character that is deleted directly, while the other characters died before being deleted.
  • Despite being deleted at the end of HOME, he still sings Datastream with Monika, as his file is restored in the "VM."
  • Boyfriend's "crazy" idle animation goes unused in HOME, due to the constant stream of notes. The player might be able to see it for a few frames as the screen fades out if they release the note on time.
  • Boyfriend's "crazy" sprites are not desaturated like his "sad" sprites.
  • Boyfriend's hair is slightly frizzed in his "crazy" sprites, unlike his "sad" or "normal" sprites.

Gallery[]

Girlfriend[]

Girlfriend is the deuteragonist of the Friday Night Funkin' series, and appears as a background character in Bad Ending.

Appearance[]

During the beginning portions of "Stagnant," Girlfriend retains her original appearance from Doki Doki Takeover. During all songs with the corrupted Dokis, Girlfriend's neck is bent completely to the side. She wears a scribbled-out expression of terror and holds her head in her hands. After the second half of Markov, Girlfriend has a single large red, bloodshot eyeball, staring at the player. She shakes with her head in her hands. At a certain part in "HOME," Girlfriend gives out and slumps down, dead. The speakers jostle around her body for the rest of the song.

Trivia[]

  • In Markov and HOME, her speakers are glitched.
    • This glitch happens to be the same glitch as Yuri's up-close right pose, obsessed Yuri's losing icon, and BF's left miss pose when not sad or crazy.

Gallery[]

Monika[]

Monika is the opponent in Datastream, a spinoff song connected to Doki Doki Takeover: Bad Ending. Monika, in Hating Simulator, realizes that DDLC is corrupting due to her absence. In the vacuum of Hating Simulator and DDLC, Monika tries to return to Doki Doki Literature Club, the game she was created, but since the game corrupted to the point it did not recognize Monika's file, her access is denied. Instead of dying, she is left suffering as a corrupted file after DDLC and the other characters have been deleted.

Appearance[]

Monika retains her original appearance from Doki Doki Takeover. However, Monika's sprites are corrupted, changing colors between blue and yellow, with different poses mixed together.

Trivia[]

  • Monika's sprites in Datastream are her unpixelated assets in DDTO, albeit switched with layers 2 and 3, and glitched into a animation.

Game Mechanics[]

  • In Markov, windows with realistic purple eyes will block upcoming notes. Just like Onslaught, Fatality and Last Hope.
    • Despite how they appear, it is not possible to close or minimize the windows.
  • When playing on Story Mode, Psych Engine's song time bar is automatically hidden.
  • Datastream has the power to visually mess with your PC, but not in a malicious way. Throughout the song many things will happen, including:
    • Window Movement.
    • Removal of the taskbar.
    • Files appearing on the screen, requiring you to close or minimize them.
    • A wallpaper change on the mod's bootup.
    • Ejection of the PC's optical disk drive.
      • The taskbar is restored upon the mod's closure, however the wallpaper will change to black and will need to be changed back.
      • Datastream's mechanics are very reminiscent of the No More Innocent Mod, albeit "spruced up".
  • In the new "Unfair" difficulty, the player is faced with the same charts as before, however, including "Notes of Markov" which the player has to avoid. If hit, they kill the player instantly.
    • Additionally, the player’s health is drained as the opponent sings.

Placeholder Used

You wanna sing? But the BG isn't finished yet! - BBPanzu

This article uses one or more placeholders. Placeholders are commonly used for when a mod or asset hasn't been released publicly. Placeholders should be replaced with official assets as soon as possible.

Note: We have no icon for Monika, so we will instead be using fanmade icons by Rickhenrique.

Starting Cutscene[]

  • [Monika glitches into the screen as a monochromatic outline before summoning code consoles that surround her, while visible static occurs and a fragment of Yuri at the end of Obsession plays in the background as a distorted version of Doki Doki Literature Club's main theme begins to play.]
  • FANMADEMonikaDDTBadEndingIcon1 Monika I... I made a mistake. I gotta fix this... somehow!
  • [The scene then cuts to the characters console, displaying all of the current characters while Boyfriend and the corrupted Girlfriend fade into view through the console. The scene then cuts back to Monika.]
  • FANMADEMonikaDDTBadEndingIcon1 Monika Wait, that kid is there too?
  • [As Monika says this, fragments of the Boyfriend and the glitched Girlfriend in the corrupted clubroom, as well as a glitched vision of Sayori, Natsuki and Yuri begin to flash in the background.]
  • FANMADEMonikaDDTBadEndingIcon1 Monika Damnit. I don't know how he even got there. But if my friends are acting like this... this is really bad.
  • [A textbox reading "Monika.chr could not be located. Find character location? YES/NO" appears on the screen as the screen glitches out, and a vision of the corrupted Sayori, Natsuki and Yuri in the "space room" fade into the background.]
  • FANMADEMonikaDDTBadEndingIcon1 Monika If my character data is acting up too, even from here, then there's a chance I still have some residual data over there.
  • FANMADEMonikaDDTBadEndingIcon1 Monika Maybe if I just... try this!
  • [The screen glitches out again, and a new textbox pops up, reading "Attempting to transfer data...". After this, the music and the same vision of the corrupted club members on the background glitch out too.]
  • [Images of the glitched Girlfriend and console (now red) flash on screen and the camera quickly zooms in to the characters console, which pops up a warning symbol, then zooms in Monika's face for a brief moment, up close to Monika's right eye, wide, red and afraid. before the camera zooms out to the whole scene, as a red textbox reading "DENIED" pops up. Everything is now red and the console denies Monika's access much to her horror.]
  • FANMADEMonikaDDTBadEndingIcon3 Monika It... It didn't work...
  • [The camera zooms into Monika's face as she says this, before glitching out of view, bringing the scene into a full black.]

Ending Cutscene[]

  • [The screen starts with a static TV screen, while some gameplay fragments of Stagnant begin to play and a distorted version of Doki Doki Literature Club's main theme plays in the background.]
  • FANMADEMonikaDDTBadEndingIcon1 Monika Okay... hold on... maybe this...?
  • [Monika appears on the screen as a white silhouette, and glitches out. A red textbox reading "DENIED" appears in front of her.]
  • FANMADEMonikaDDTBadEndingIcon3 Monika No... why...?!
  • [All of the computer windows around her go red, her right eye goes red, wide, and afraid. She disappears for a moment, with the screen fading to a static black while she is heard hyperventilating.]
  • FANMADEMonikaDDTBadEndingIcon2 Monika Nothing's working...!
  • [Monika flashes back on the screen, crying, her hands are on her head in frustration and fear, while the windows stop working at last. Gameplay fragments of Markov and HOME begin to play as she fades out of view once again.]
  • FANMADEMonikaDDTBadEndingIcon2 Monika This can't... be happening...
  • [Monika is shown once again. Her hands cover her face as she sobs, the background shifts as it shows the end of HOME, where all the club members and Girlfriend are shown dead, with Boyfriend saddened over the loss of them, while remaining on the last coded piece of the game as DDLC is terminated into nonexistence. The sight of this causes her to fall and sob even louder, with her right hand clutching her chest.]
  • FANMADEMonikaDDTBadEndingIcon2 Monika It's all my fault...
  • [As Monika says this, she and the TV static disappear, showing a clear vision of the other club members, Girlfriend and Boyfriend. After a few moments, the screen glitches, and a red window pops up. This is how it reads:]

DDTOBadEndingRedWindow

  • [The message glitches out of view, bringing the screen to a complete black.]

Trivia[]

  • The mod's title screen and main menu is a reference to the infamous Doki Doki Literature Club easter egg from Act 2, with the Dokis appearing eyeless. Different from the original easter egg, the menus are accessible.
    • Tabbing out of the mod causes the screen to zoom in on Sayori after a few seconds.
  • During the main menu, there is a chance for a Cirno Fumo to appear on the screen instead of the girls, also being grayscaled and eyeless.
  • Sayori's poem sprites are a reference to a special poem the player can get in the main game. The difference is that Sayori is more detailed.
  • The order of the songs corresponds with the order of the girls' deaths in the original game. Natsuki is different because she has a fake death.
  • The progression of Stagnant references how Doki Doki Literature Club starts as an innocent game before turning into a dark horror game.
    • The song's name also references a quote from Yuri in Doki Doki Literature Club where she expresses that stagnating air is common foreshadowing that something terrible is about to happen.
  • The mod was released on June 30th because its the one-year anniversary of Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! and also the reboot of Monika's full week.
  • DusterBuster conceptualized Bad Ending upon being approached by Matt$ and Kallionic with previews of horror-themed songs using the vocals of the Doki Doki Takeover characters.[11]
  • The Bad Ending is where Monika was unable to save everyone in DDLC due to access being denied and by being too slow into doing so while she talks inside the vacuum, while in the other ending, Monika was able to go back into her own world as her dialogue is the same as the intro dialogue in this ending while instead, it happens in the Hating Simulator.
  • For the preview of Stagnant, Matt$ captioned: "SGVsbG8/IEFtIEkgY29taW5nIHRocm91Z2ggY2xlYXJseT8= TW9uaWthLi4uIHNoZSBsZWZ0IHVzIGhlcmUgdG8gZGllLi4uIFRoaXMgZ2FtZSwgaXQgaXNuJ3QuLi4uICJzdGFibGUiIHdpdGhvdXQgaGVyLiBJIGRvbid0IGtub3cgaG93IG11Y2ggbG9uZ2VyIEkgY2FuIGhvbGQgdGhlIGxpdGVyYXR1cmUgY2x1YiB0b2dldGhlci4uLg==" When translated from Base64, it translates to: "Hello? Am I coming through clearly? Monika... she left us here to die. This game, it isn't... "stable" without her. I don't know how much longer I can hold the literature club together...". Presumed to be said by Sayori.
  • HOME was originally going to be named either "Shatter" or "Crack."[12]
    • The current name is a reference to Natsuki's abuse subplot from Act 2 in DDLC.
  • In Datastream, players may encounter Binary text when the application window's name changes. Once deciphered, the code reads "It hurts." (Binary text: 01101001 01110100 00100000 01101000 01110101 01110010 01110100 01110011)
  • The spin-off song is in a different mod, and is near impossible to play "normally" due to many mechanics moving all at once.
    • The reason Datastream appears as a separate mod is because DusterBuster dislikes the idea of a song so reverently affecting a PC with its mechanics.

NOTE 1: Datastream will change your desktop background and remove your taskbar so it's recommended to backup your desktop background. The taskbar will be restored upon closure of the mod.

NOTE 2: The mod, after finishing, will only show Yuri's realistic eyes if you attempt to open it again. To replay, simply create a file called "Monika.chr" in the Assets\shared\images folder or unzip again.
