Friday Night Funkin': Corruption is a mod created by Phantom Fear inspired by the Girlfriend Christmas decoration in Week 5's Winter Horrorland of the official game. Development is showcased in the form of a apocalypse drama video series on Youtube—as of December 2023, the series spans 22 episodes, and is still in development.

The mod changes the appearances of Boyfriend and Girlfriend to resemble that of the Winter Horrorland decoration. Two demos containing weeks from the video series have been released.

Story[]

Plot[]

Boyfriend and Girlfriend are infected by a mysterious disease that transforms them into monstrous entities known as the Corrupted. These entities have dark figures and disfigured, glowing faces. This disease, named Corruption,[citation needed] aims to take over the world.

Characters who fully succumb to the Corruption are generally referred to as Evil counterparts.

In My Way (Week 1)[]

Evil Boyfriend and Girlfriend encounter Pico, who is already partially infected. The battle goes back and forth—with the corrupted Boyfriend infecting Pico while the latter manages to make Boyfriend briefly come back to his senses—but Pico ultimately succumbs to the Corruption entirely.

Good Times Must End (Week 2)[]

Evil Boyfriend and Girlfriend confront Skid and Pump, with the latter of whom already completely infected. Skid, amidst becoming infected, gets more desperate as the week progresses, losing control over his body in the end as he fully succumbs to the Corruption.

Must Murder Mommy (Week 3)[]

Evil Pico seeks out Mommy Mearest and attempts to infect her. Mearest is able to put up a good resistance and even succeeds in partially saving Pico, but is abruptly defeated as Evil Pico musters support from other corrupted beings, namely Mearest’s henchmen.

Delete (Week 4)[]

Evil Boyfriend forces his soul into Hating Simulator to corrupt Senpai and, associatively, Spirit. Senpai initially behaves identically to his original appearance, but he quickly reacts to Evil Boyfriend's attempt at corrupting and seizing control over the game world. As the week progresses, the environment and characters of the game become more distorted and unstable.

Senpai transforms into Spirit in a last-ditch attempt to stop Evil Boyfriend from deleting Hating Simulator. Ultimately, Evil Boyfriend wins and erases Spirit before returning to the real world to hunt down the last survivor.

One Left (Week 5)[]

Evil Boyfriend faces Daddy Dearest in a final showdown to determine the fate of the world. Throughout the week, Daddy Dearest fights valiantly against his corrupted foe, using his powers to fend off and even reverse the corruption brought upon him. Evil Boyfriend calls forth the characters fought throughout the story—now completely overtaken by corruption—to fight alongside him. Daddy Dearest manages to last against them until he's forced to face Mommy Mearest. Seeing his wife lost to the Corruption, he loses the will to keep fighting, and is thus swiftly finished off by Evil Boyfriend.

??? (Week 6)[]

Boyfriend finds himself within his mind, where he is forcibly woken up by Soul Boyfriend—a black, demonic-looking entity resembling him—who immediately challenges him to a rap battle. The two of them sing together as Evil Boyfriend seemingly watches them through a large monitor. Soul Boyfriend and Evil Boyfriend engage in a struggle to see who can assert their influence over Boyfriend. The fight is interrupted as Boyfriend is sent to an isolated part of his mind.

Boyfriend loses his confidence as he is now alone, desperately fighting against the corruption. Suddenly, Soul Boyfriend returns while playing a guitar, which he throws at Boyfriend. He then pulls out a different guitar of his own, leading to the start of the final fight against the Corruption. The struggle continues, as the corruption attempts to dispirit Boyfriend, while Soul Boyfriend encourages the rapper and reminds him of what he's fighting for. Finally, Boyfriend and Soul Boyfriend succeed in breaking the corruption and escape the dark part of Boyfriend's mind.

With the mind world shattered, Soul Boyfriend tells Boyfriend that it is time for him to leave, but is convinced by the rapper into singing one last song as a sendoff. The song ends with Soul Boyfriend performing an uppercut on Boyfriend, insisting that he beats the Corruption. Boyfriend—free of corruption—wakes up and is ready to fight; however, his newfound confidence quickly vanishes as Evil Girlfriend reveals herself, scaring Boyfriend into submission.

Saving Girlfriend/Fly In A Web (Week 7)[]

Boyfriend, now corruption-free, goes face to face against Evil Girlfriend in order to free her of her corruption. The Corruption is now using illusions to trick and demoralize Boyfriend, such as Evil Girlfriend snapping her own neck whilst screaming in pain, and feigning Girlfriend's rescue to lure Boyfriend towards a surprise attack.

The tide of the battle shifts constantly, with Evil Girlfriend's illusions leading Boyfriend to despair and hopelessness, while Soul Boyfriend helps him snap out of it and gain the strength to keep going. Eventually, Girlfriend is freed from the Corruption's grasp. Boyfriend and Girlfriend embrace, relieved after being finally reunited, when bullets suddenly start flying left and right towards the couple, separating the two. Boyfriend dives into Girlfriend and they both roll out of the way, ending up on a street. Boyfriend looks around and spots Evil Pico on a mound, smiling maniacally, who is ready to fight him.

Saving Pico/In Your Way (Week 8)[]

Evil Pico engages Boyfriend in battle. The two sing in an intense match, the former growing more manic as it goes on. Halfway through the fight against an insane Pico, Boyfriend cheers, throwing his left hand up in the air, before Evil Pico shoots him, aiming for the head. Pico manages to slightly uncorrupt himself in time to witness Boyfriend appear to be killed. However, the blue-haired rapper has narrowly avoided death; he quickly climbs to his feet and looks at his hand—the part that was actually shot—noticing it is bleeding. Boyfriend and Evil Pico continue singing like nothing had happened until Pico's and the corruption's faces abruptly turn blank, supposedly in shock. At the same time, a mysterious figure that had been watching the duel in the background can be seen flying away.

Evil Pico undergoes a transformation. He reaches a new form—known as Nexus—that boasts enhanced speed, power, and new abilities, which he tries to kill Boyfriend with. In the midst of the battle, Girlfriend chimes in and strategizes with Boyfriend that if he can tire out Pico, he might be able to land a punch on him, finishing him off. Later on, Boyfriend gets an idea after he swishes his left hand back and forth, causing blood to fly out of it. Nexus Pico and Boyfriend continue fighting until the former reaches the end of his rope and attempts a rapid-fire attack on Boyfriend as a last resort. Boyfriend counters by throwing blood in Nexus Pico's face, then punching him, shattering the form and breaking Pico free from the Corruption.

Pico sits up after being knocked to the ground, looking confused and hazy. He quickly regains his composure, stands up, grabs his guns, and smiles confidently as Tankmen-zombies start to approach the trio. Pico stands on the speakers and lays gunfire on the horde of zombies, with Boyfriend and Girlfriend cheering him on as he sings. The Tankmen-zombies suddenly begin to disperse, jumping behind the speakers and off the bridge as a large shadow manifests behind the trio.

Tankman/AMALGAMA (Mini-Week)[]

The horde of Tankmen-zombies the trio were fighting scatter, fusing into a huge beast that slowly takes form, looming over the trio. That beast is a giant, bony amalgamation of Tankmen corpses that resembles a lanky Tankman with many spikes on its head and back. Boyfriend and Pico sing against the amalgamation while both parties trade attacks.

During the fight, the mysterious figure seen in the previous week is introduced. They seem to be a masked jester with white eyes and orange and purple clothing. At first, they only observe the ongoing battle, but they soon force it to end by snapping their fingers, causing the giant beast to explode.

Boyfriend and Girlfriend celebrate their victory and Pico's return, but the ginger is having none of it, punching Boyfriend in the face and yelling at him for the blow he was dealt earlier. On a rooftop, the jester looks down at the group, holding a cube with small particles flowing into it—presumably souls. An unknown entity appears to communicate with the jester, mentioning something about souls, a key, and that the jester shall replace someone, becoming "The Harvester".

Senpai/Return Null (Week 9)[]

Boyfriend, Girlfriend and Pico walk through an alley. Boyfriend gives Girlfriend his winter coat after she sneezes, causing her to quickly leave the scene embarrassed. Boyfriend then notices a dark shadow, the Harvester, behind him. They float over to Boyfriend and reach their hand out. Boyfriend is quick to shake it as the Harvester talks to him, recognizing the blue-haired rapper and expressing their hate for him. As the jester speaks, Boyfriend's hand is zapped. He clutches it from the shock when a rainbow-colored flame sparks from it, surprising him. Harvester attempts to play a game with Boyfriend but is forced to flee after Pico shoots a flurry of bullets in their direction. Boyfriend and Pico angrily bark at each other before the latter leaves.

The Harvester pushes a TV and a console with Hating Simulator off a rooftop that lands on Boyfriend and sucks him inside. Boyfriend falls into the game, where he lands in the middle of a black void. There, he faces what remains of Senpai. Due to the state Hating Simulator was left in after the events of Delete, Senpai, along with everything surrounding him and Boyfriend, is highly unstable and corrupted, erratically moving about with a distorted, glitchy appearance.

Meanwhile, outside of the game, Girlfriend calls out for Boyfriend, concerned and saddened to be separated from him. As she begins to cry, the shadow of a tall, imposing, and familiar figure walks toward Girlfriend. She is horrified at the sight before her: her mother, completely infected by corruption, standing tall over her. Elsewhere, Pico peeks into a room with a corrupted citizen, Skid, feasting(?) on the corpse of Lila—his own mother. Pico, horrified, throws up and leans against a wall to compose himself. He then notices the Harvester floating up to a corrupted Ross, whom they presumably absorb with their cube. Upon seeing this, Pico looks back at Evil Skid and quickly shuts the door, drawing Harvester's attention.

Back inside Hating Simulator, Senpai transforms into Spirit and battles Boyfriend once again, as the void around them becomes more erratic and unstable. Spirit screams for help and attempts to reach out of the game throughout the fight. The fight concludes with Spirit successfully catching Boyfriend in one of his hands, whom he carries away. A command console appears and someone attempts to enter commands into it, each one failing. Whoever is attempting to execute these commands does not have access to do so. The console attempts to display the administrator's name; however, it is corrupted, being written out as random symbols in various colors before flashing "Null" as the line disappears. The console throws a Null Object Reference error on-screen before apparently crashing with a loud buzzing noise and a black, glitchy silhouette resembling Senpai becoming visible.

Trivia[]

  • Victims of Corruption have been shown to still be alive and conscious, however stripped of free will, while corrupted. Pico appears to be an exception to this rule.

  • Despite Week 3 being made first, the demo first included Week 2. This is because the creators noticed that Week 2 was the most popular among users and that the mod would get much more popular if they released the demo with that week exclusively.
  • In the demo, Spookeez (RenRenNumberTen Remix) uses the orginal song's vocals instead of the remix's.
  • At the end of Chiller, a voice saying "Spooky Month" can be heard.
  • This is the first mod to add a third song for Week 2. The second was Starcatcher, the third was D-Sides, and the fourth was Hellbeats.

  • Mommy Mearest doesn't fight back because she doesn't understand how corruption works and it's her first time seeing it.[1]
  • Evil Pico is confirmed to have been a "lil bit crazy,"[2] as he is stated to attack everyone and everything. This includes a pair of chains which he accidentally tangled himself up in by the time the encounter with Mommy Mearest takes place.
    • A popular theory among fans is that Evil Pico is crazy due to Pico's long list of mental health issues, such as PTSD and untreated Schizophrenia.
  • Schizophrenzy's melody in the intro references a Cymatics pack sample.

  • In this mod's narrative, Senpai and Spirit are the same person, as opposed to how their relation to each other is portrayed in the original game.
  • During this week's cutscenes, Evil Boyfriend is shown to enter commands to grant admin privileges, delete files and write messages in a console. These commands appear to show that Hating Simulator, the game that Senpai and Spirit reside in, might be running on the HaxeFlixel engine.
    • However, it is entirely possible that this is Boyfriend breaking the fourth wall in order to delete Senpai's assets, which explains the attempted deletion of the "weeb" assets and FUNKIN.EXE.
  • The sprites used for Spirit in Treacherous Thorns and Roots were created by NeatoNG, who had previously made a similar mod by the name of Lemon Spirit, which used a similar sprite.
  • Dead Pixel, Treacherous Thorns, and Roots have the only sets of dialogue that changes portraits mid-cutscene.
  • In the Delete Week demo, the image shown in the options menu contains binary code that can't be seen in-game due to it being overlaid by a TV. Translating it will reveal a message that reads: You are a mere copy of me. An inspiration.
  • In said demo, beating the week transforms it into Week Null, where attempting to play it will crash the game. If the mod is re-opened, an option asking whether Soul Boyfriend can access the player's computer will be prompted. Allowing it would instantly download some files, one of them being "GlitchBF.jar". With this, the player can have Glitch Boyfriend as their desktop pet, a notable first in the community's history.

  • During Deathmatch, Daddy Dearest undergoes several changes to his appearance. Apart from various levels of corruption on his body, his eyes start and stop glowing at several points throughout.
  • During Deathmatch, Evil Skid & Pump and Daddy Dearest sing a part of Among Us Trap Remix by Leonz, as stated by Saruky on Twitter. It is unknown whether this is unintentional.[3]
    • This section in Deathmatch is also based on a beta version of Chiller.[4]
  • Deathmatch reuses the last section of Tutorial's Hard difficulty chart at the very end of the song.

  • Soul Boyfriend is voiced by Saster/Sub0ru.
    • Soul Boyfriend used to be voiced by Phantom Fear, meaning that he was British instead of Japanese.[5]
  • Pincer has stated that Soul Boyfriend loves playing guitars, and is very good at it.
  • Every song in this week (with the exception of MEMORY//LEAK) uses Saster's signature motif, which he includes within all music he makes.[6]
  • The starting and ending synths of Tormentor contain a slight leitmotif of the main menu theme.
  • Neuroses is named after a symptom known as Neurosis, a relatively mild mental illness that is not caused by organic disease, involving symptoms of stress (depression, anxiety, obsessive behavior, hypochondria) but not a radical loss of touch with reality.
  • The music video for Discharge lists the intro as a completely separate song from Discharge itself, labeling it "Strength of Will".
    • Strength of Will starts once the Corruption says "Go to sleep." All of the non-rhythmic notes sung before then in the official gameplay video do not get recorded as part of the song.
  • Discharge contains a multitude of motifs of other Corruption songs within it, including Chiller, Neuroses, Tormentor, and Deathmatch.
  • Discharge is the second song in the modding community to utilize alternate note designs reminiscent of games such as Guitar Hero. The first is Marx from Vs Sunday.
  • Discharge took 40 hours to make, according to the music video's description.
  • Phantom Fear has acknowledged and praised a fan-made Corruption side story manga featuring Soul Boyfriend, created by Pixiv user 雪桜.

  • Boyfriend lacks a danger icon, as seen in Estranged.
    • A possible explanation for this is that the event of BF losing was merely an illusion that didn't actually happen.
  • Yandere Attack is a remastered version of the original mix.

  • In Headshot's mid-song cutscene, Girlfriend is missing her gloves. This is confirmed to be a sprite error and will be fixed in the full mod's release.
  • The Nexus form has lore connected to it, as seen in the description of the video where the form made its debut, which describes it in further detail.
  • Boyfriend punching Nexus Pico in Blood Moon was originally going to have a rainbow effect similar to Soul Boyfriend's uppercut in MEMORY//LEAK. However, the idea was scrapped due to people thinking it would make no sense.[7]
  • According to Phantom Fear in Headshot Direct, all nexus form characters have a different ability.
    • Nexus Pico whole gimmick is gravity.

  • According to Phantom Fear in an interview, the Tankmen soldiers seen in this week encountered Evil Pico, who killed them by blowing their faces off. They were infected after they died, resulting in them becoming undead, rather than corrupted beings.

  • Null and Void was made all the way back on early 2022.
  • Boyfriend's design in CHKDSK fixes an error present in MEMORY//LEAK by having the letters "NG" engraved on the outsoles of his shoes.
  • The song for Null D3 has confirmed to be called Access Denied.

  • Phantom Fear has not yet confirmed the origins of Corruption. A popular theory amongst fans is that Monster created it during Winter Horrorland. This stems from the appearance of the head of Girlfriend placed upon the tree in Winter Horrorland, which bears strong similarities with the aesthetic of the Corruption. Additionally, Monster's silhouette appears when the lightning flashes during Week 2.
    • However, this theory is largely built upon coincidences, so it is advised to take it with a grain of salt.
  • Phantom Fear has stated that the infection spreads via sound waves from an infected party and by physical contact.
  • When Boyfriend is partially uncorrupted by Pico, the parts of him not covered in corruption show him in his normal outfit instead of the one from Week 5.
    • Pincer later confirmed this was because they were still working on the design.
  • The only characters known to be able to fight off their own Corruption thus far are Pico, Daddy Dearest, and Boyfriend.
    • Additionally, Boyfriend is the only character shown to be able to fight off their corruption after being fully infected.
  • Spirit is the only character who does not appear to be directly affected by the Corruption, and is instead dealt with by being deleted outright.
  • The older weeks of the mod will be remastered before release, having their own songs.
  • Pincer has stated that corrupted people cannot open doors,[8] and that, apparently, the Corruption's IQ is a little under the Velociraptor's.[9] This was later stated to have been a joke.[10]
  • Throughout the story, Boyfriend takes on four different forms: Normal, Evil, Pixel Evil, and Soul. Pincer has stated that Pixel Evil Boyfriend and Soul Boyfriend are the same entity, but later corrected herself.
  • Phantom Arcade has acknowledged the mod's existence in a live stream.
  • There's a file in each demo called "forharry" ("for harry" in the Week 2 demo) under different formats - an FL Studio project file on the Week 2 demo and a text document on the Week 6 demo.
    • Decoding the Base64 string on the text document reveals this message:
  • For Harry,

    Where are you?

Have you forgotten about me, about us? What about our kids?

We’ve barricaded ourselves inside the house since you left, we are running low on food. The kids are starving Harry. YOUR kids are starving.

I shouldn’t be surprised anyway, I knew you were seeing someone else.

Well good for you. I hope you’re happy. Happy knowing YOUR FAMILY IS TRAPPED INSIDE THE HOUSE BECAUSE YOU’RE NOT HERE TO HELP US.

We can’t leave because there’s some drunk who has been smashing our windows and banging on our door since last Tuesday. The police lines have been full all week and no one is hearing our calls for help.

He is so persistent, I have been ringing your phone EVERYDAY SINCE. It hangs up instantly, did you change numbers to get away from me?? Did you really think that would work? I still have this email and your social media you asshole.

We’ve moved furniture in front of the door to stop him kicking it down. I can’t even get a clear look at his face, it’s as if he’s always covered in a dark shadow, even in the day time???

We are terrified, he’s a strong build just like you, probably even as tall as you, there’s no way I could stop him alone he’s like twice my size. Me and the kids are helpless until you arrive.

You already know it’s over between us now Harry. After this drunk is gone I want a divorce, I’m sure that will get your kicks off so you can be with whatever bitch you left us for.

But please Harry, don’t do it for me, do it for our kids. We need your help, our barricade isn’t going to last another night.

    Come home.

    • In the saving videos, Boyfriend and Girlfriend have darker color schemes than normal: Boyfriend has darker coat and shoes, while Girlfriend has a darker dress, stockings, hair, and skin tone. Upon interviewing Pincer about it, she stated that it was done intentionally because the bright color schemes paired with the dark, apocalyptic nature of the corruption didn't look right, so she changed it.[11]
    • In the saving videos, the corruption's artstyle has changed as well, having black outlines, proper shading and more unique facial designs. Pincer has confirmed that these designs will be used in every week. This implies that Boyfriend will get a new design as well. [12]
    • In the music videos for some of the tracks that have them, lyrics or spoken dialogue are absent, either partially or completely.
      • In Discharge, the lines "Ready to ditch this joint?" and "Let's end this!" don't appear in the song's music video.
      • The dialogue in MEMORY//LEAK is similarly absent in its' music video.
      • Allure and Estranged both have no dialogue in their music videos.
    • The Corruption mod has official merchandise.[13]
    • The mod has gained notable negative attention due to the community making mods where the Corruption affects other popular modded characters, such as Whitty.
      • These Corruption add-ons tend to be of poor quality, resulting in the mod itself gaining large amounts of negative attention. At one time, particularly during mid-late 2021, when Corruption was a fairly basic concept, many outside viewers dubbed the corruption "MS Paint Black and Red."
      • It is widely accepted that Tricky the Clown is one of the few characters capable of resisting corruption due to his in-universe reality-warping powers. Other characters that are accepted as being immune or at least far more capable of fending it off are Shaggy from the Vs. Shaggy mod, Whitty from Vs. Whitty Full Week, and Matt from Wii Funkin'.
        • Despite this wide acceptance, Tricky, Matt, and Shaggy have been corrupted in fan-made mods, as well as an infected Whitty making a cameo in Deathmatch's background as an easter egg. These have generally been accepted as not being canon.
        • Matt's fan-made Corruption spawned a short meme of a line from it "*crys* why.....", even being referenced in Matt's 2.1 update where Boyfriend breaks the 4th wall and Matt is confused and scared.
    • A Whitty week was in the works at some point in development, but was scrapped since Whitty's mod was cancelled and deleted.[14]
      • This is why Whitty appears as a cameo in Deathmatch, as another way to pay tribute to the mod.
    • There are several mods that share a song name with the Corruption mod.
    • Corruption is the 7th mod to have the countdown play in the middle of the song. The first being Pompom and Mackie, the second being Vs. Sonic.Exe, the third being Friday Fed Fright, the fourth being Antipathy Hank, the fifth being Indie Cross, and the sixth being Cheeky.
      • However, this mod is the second to use a unique countdown sound while doing so, the first being Antipathy Hank.
