Murder Sans, also known as just Sans, is the main character of Dusttale, who after so many erased worlds, and so many murdered loved ones, decided to put an end to this tale. He is the opponent of almost all songs, except for a few, facing Boyfriend, and his forced partner, Chara.
Appearance[]
V3[]
Sans' basic appearance is almost identical, however his "belly" appears fuller, and he is constantly sweating with a decadent smile. He wears the hood of his hoodie, and wears blue-gray untied sneakers (one of his many official shoes). His color palette is more "dead", with more bluish tones of white, a dark zipper and a dark purplish blue hoodie, and a light purple shirt. His magical left eye has yellow (the color of justice) switched to red that surrounds the cyan (the color of patience), showing his growing determination. He, midway through the song, changes to a pixelated style, with colors closer to conventional black and white, and his eye is completely red. In Kinemorto, his fists are clenched, his eye is activated, his gaze is piercing, facing the human(s). The lower part, that is, the tip of his hoodie downwards, is covered with dust.
V2/V1[]
Murder Sans is the same as his mainstream appearance from Undertale, however, his hood is up and his clothes are stained by dust. In The Murder, his eyes are small and red, not the usual white. He also has a depressed expression. In Red Megalovania, Drowning, and the first phase of Reality Check, his pupils have widened, and his left eye is blue encircled in red. He also has a black pupil on his right eye. In Psychotic Breakdown, D.I.E, the second part of Reality Check, and Wounded Shooting (a lot ik), he has an insane expression, with widened eye sockets and a wider grin. Finally, in Anthropophobia and the final part of Reality Check, Sans visibly sweats with a determined expression, and the red in his left eye has become pinkish-purple and glows brightly.

Trivia[]

- Papyrus still haunts Murder Sans as a hallucination, even if the latter was successful.
- According to the creator of Dusttale, Murder Sans is unable to fall in love with anyone in his universe.
- The only monster he regrets killing is Papyrus, obviously since he is his brother, and all the strong relationship the have made across the years before the human came.
- The creator of Dusttale has stated that Sans does in fact know that the phantom is not real, but still talks to the hallucination for sanity.
- Much of the fandom confuses Sans for being the main antagonist of Dusttale. In reality, he is truly the protagonist of the AU, as Sans is the lead/main character and most of the AU is in his perspective.

Papyrus[]

Papyrus is the younger brother of Sans, being the initial opponent in Kinemorto until being killed by his own brother.
Phantom Papyrus is the deuteragonist of Dusttale, appearing in the V2 of the mod at the current moment. Although his appearance may suggest otherwise, he is actually a hallucination of Papyrus, not a ghost. He haunts and helps Sans on his mission to gain enough LV to kill The Human, by forcing him to continue killing. In the new update of the mod, we get to see Papyrus before he becomes the phantom that he is now, getting killed by his brother.

Papyrus looks exactly the same as the original game.
Phantom Papyrus looks like the normal Papyrus, but with no body or legs, leaving him as just a floating head with hands. He still retains his scarf and gloves, but his eyes are red. Despite the images seen, Papyrus is semi-transparent whenever seen in the mod. Before his death, he appeared as he was prior, having the same chestplate and red scarf and shoes, holding a microphone and facing Boyfriend. At the end of Kinemorto, his head only remains before fading away.

Trivia[]
- Since Papyrus is a hallucination in this AU, he cannot be killed due to already being killed by Sans.
- He cannot be seen normally. The only ones that can see him are Sans, the human and Boyfriend (during Hallucinations, and only because Chara is in control).
- In the non-canon fan-game, he is fought in the middle of the final Sans fight. In the mod, he is fought in the Genocide Ending after Sans is killed, but later disappears.
- It is unknown how Boyfriend can interact with him or how he exists after Sans' death, due to being a hallucination.
- The creator of Dusttale has stated that Sans does in fact know that the phantom isn't real, but still talks to the hallucination for at least the minimum of sanity.
- Despite Papyrus telling Boyfriend to follow his lead in Kinemorto, the latter is the one to sing first.
- This may be a reference to the fact that, in a Genocide Route of Undertale, the protagonist always proceeds during Papyrus' dialogues, ignoring him.
- It's possible that his fearful expression in Kinemorto doesn't stem from the fact that he's about to die, but rather from what his brother has become.
- Similar instances occur in his deaths in the Neutral and Genocide Routes, where he completely ignores the face that he's been beheaded and in the latter scenario, he keeps insisting that the protagonist can still be a better person if they try.

Boyfriend[]
Frisk Boyfriend is the story mode playable character, and a former rapper that was possessed by Chara. After the mysterious murder of his girlfriend, and fearing for his own life, Boyfriend sought refuge and ended up falling into the Underground, staying there for an indefinite time until he was possessed by Chara, becoming another vessel for the genocidal thirst of the fallen human. In V2, he was just his normal self, coming to the Underground for unknown reasons and having often rap battles with Sans, only to fall under Chara's control at random points, much to his confusion.

V3[]
Boyfriend retains the same appearance as the original, however his face is covered in shadow and his mouth is not visible in his idle. His color palette is more "dead" so to speak. At certain moments a red glow appears in the darkness of his face, resembling an eye.
V2[]
Boyfriend's appearance only changes when possessed by Chara. In this form, his eyes become glowing red dots and his eyebrows disappear, and his microphone becomes a kitchen knife. In his poses his face becomes a glitchy black goo, with his eyes and mouth turning black, empty and oozing.

- In V3, his sprites are from ZERO, the same artist for Boyfriend's sprites in Skeleton Bros and CN Takeover.
- Boyfriend seems to be up against not only Sans, but Pico too as seen in the Perseverance cutscene.

Girlfriend[]
Phantom Girlfriend is the hallucination of Girlfriend, who was killed by an unknown cause. Boyfriend, fearing his death as well, fled to the Underground, and is now haunted by his girl's eerie ghost. She only appears in the last seconds of Perseverance, apparently playing the song. In V2, she has a very small role appearing in the background without doing much.

Phantom Girlfriend has a similar appearance to the normal version of herself, however her body is transparent, in shades of purple, along with a tail instead of legs. Her eyes are completely white and glowing, while her hair looks messy, showing her overgrown horns. She holds a boombox in her right hand.
In Drowning, she has her left hand on her chin, sitting on Undyne's melting right shoulder.

DustSwap Papyrus[]

DustSwap Papyrus is the main character of the AU DustSwap, where the events of Dusttale occur in the Underswap universe. It should originally be called Swapdust, given the character's setting. Underswap's Papyrus has gone crazy trying to collect LV. He's the opponent of the freeplay song Homie-cide, killing everyone in Muffet's, including his brother.
Appearance[]
Papyrus resembles his normal US version, but with an even bigger smile (in contrast to Murder!Sans), and less serene. Like Sans, he puts on the hood of his peach-orange hoodie, but retains his habit of smoking cigarettes. His magical eyes have orange (the color of bravery) changed to a more yellowish tone (the color of justice), while is left eye covers a green pupil (the color of kindness, ironically). In a flashback, it is possible to see his old self, which soon changes to his current self.

DustSwap Sans[]

Dustswap Sans, or simply Sans, is a alternative Sans from the Dustswap universe, where Papyrus, whose personality role was changed with Sans, lost his sanity after multiples resets of genocide.
Appearance[]
Dustswap Sans wears a torn blue scarf, a white chestplate and dark shorts. He has blue glowing eyes and a dark blue tongue. Near the end of the song, he becomes a Phantom, with a saddened remorsed face, his broken dark blue scarf, and two giant blue hands.

Fell Sans[]
Fell Sans is the main protagonist of Dustfell, which is a combination of the Dusttale and Underfell AUs. He is an upcoming character to the mod.
It is often referred to as Dustfell, but it is more accurately Felldust, since it is an AU where Dusttale events occurred in the Underfell world. The first time Dustfell/Felldust was posted was by Renmargo, but there is no established information because there is no official and various interpretations exist.

Fell Sans wears a gray jacket with gold zip lines with a red sweater underneath and thick raised fur around his neck area. He also wears black shorts with gold lines and red shoes. His pupils are purple in color with his right pupil having an inner red pupil and his left being diamond shaped. He has a menacing smile filled with sharp teeth with one gold tooth.
DustDust Sans[]
DustDust Sans (or also Erect Sans) is the main protagonist of Dustdust. This is not an official Dustdust, but a fan-made Dustdust created by TheFlameLord (called Hatred! Dustdust, etc.) In the world of Dusttale, Sans went above ground by absorbing the soul of patience without facing humans. He's meant to appear in the upcoming erect remix for Anthropophobia.

DustDust Sans appears completely different from his base counterpart as his face is completely shrouded in darkness save for the glowing white outline of his smile and his cyan and purple eyes. He wears a darkened jacket similar to the base Dust!Sans but having a dark stain below rather than the gray or white of dust. Lastly he has large purple and black slippers.
Fresh Sans[]
Fresh (sometimes referred to the Undertale community by Fresh Sans) is a character, originally an alternative form of Sans, created by Tumblr user TheCrayonQueen (also known for creating Error / "Error Sans" and Aftertale's "Geno"). His origins were that a parasite went inside Sans' left eye. Fresh has been confirmed coming by a teaser for his song "YOLO", used as a bonus song that includes B3 Boyfriend as the playable character.

Fresh wears a getup akin to the style of the 80's era of fashion, donning a brightly colored jacket, shorts, and shoes, with prominent colors of green, cyan, purple, and yellow. He also wears his signature YOLO sunglasses and a red backwards cap, signifying how fresh and cool he is. He also has one gold tooth like Fell Sans.

- Fresh's influence in the Undertale community spread some works by other creators, such as a Tumblr ask page.
- He was originally a joke character, based on Dippy Fresh from Gravity Falls. Starting off as a 90s influenced form of Sans, he became an original character, and part of TheCrayonQueen's other projects.

Ultra Sans[]
“get comfortable”

Ultra Sans is a powerful form of Sans created by A Huge Pancake, gained after he dealt a fatal blow from Chara, turning him into a god-like entity much like Asriel, capable of controlling the player's menu and destroying battle mechanics, stopping the player from not only fighting but healing back health. He may be powerful but is ultimately killed by the Annoying Dog after he gains the Legendary Artifact. He is an upcoming character to this mod.

Ultra Sans is a god-like transformation of Sans where he loses his lower body and becomes mostly a pair of giant skeleton arms connected to his cracked skull head. His skull head possesses multiple cracks and his smile is much longer. His shoulder blades are instead spine bones which connect to his giant arms.
Horror Sans[]
Horror Sans is an upcoming character to the mod in the song Inopia and is a horror version of Sans hailing from Horrortale.
Horror Sans comes from an alternate universe where the monsters have to eat humans to survive as food and power has run low. Alphys devised a plan to use Sans' magic to power the underground, but for that, he'd have to die at the hands of Undyne. This failed however, leaving Sans angry as he took revenge on Alphys.

Horror Sans for the most part resembles Sans with the exception of having a cracked skull with blood seeping from it, even going to his blue jacket. He also has red eyes.
Horror Papyrus[]
Horror Papyrus is an upcoming character to the mod and is a horror version of Papyrus hailing from Horrortale. He will appear after Sans in Inopia according to the YouTube versions description for the teaser.

Horror Papyrus for the most part resembles Papyrus except for his minuscule eyes and irregular bloody teeth.
Dustbelief Papyrus[]
Dustbelief Papyrus is an alternate version of Papyrus hailing as the main character of Dustbelief. When Sans tries to kill him, he acts out of self defense and accidentally murders his older brother. Guilt ridden, Papyrus vows to finish what he started by killing as many monsters as possible to permanently dispose of the human, resulting in his insanity.

This version of Tankman is a average Tankman that takes heavy inspiration from Sergeant John Captain, however has a cracked vision, revealing a green eye. They also have a red scarf like Papyrus.

Chara[]

Chara is the main antagonist of the non-canon Dusttale fan-game the mod is based on. They are the one who controls Frisk (or in this case, Boyfriend) and make them go on a killing spree. They're the opponent of the Pacifist Route in V2, while being an occasional supporting character in V3, planned to be a upcoming opponent or possible playable character.

Chara has red-brown hair, round ears, pale skin, rosy cheeks, and a noseless face, with large red eyes, and a closed ear-to-ear smile. She wields the Real Knife, which resembles a barbecue knife, however glowing red and looking like a shiny crystal. They wear a green turtleneck sweater, with a yellow stripe crossing their chest and the middle of their arms. They also have short shorts rather than pants which show Chara wearing socks.
V2[]
Chara looks strikingly similar to the protagonist of Undertale, Frisk, sporting a green sweater with a cream-colored stripe in the center, black pants and shoes, and a hairstyle identical to Frisk's. They have peach skin, brown hair, rosy cheeks, and wide red eyes that accompany a wide smile. When Chara slashes Boyfriend, their red eyes widen while they open their mouth, boasting a distorted smile.

- Chara hated humanity.
- They died by buttercup poisoning.
- They are the one who controlled Boyfriend during Anthropophobia (and Hallucinations if you choose to attack Sans).
- Chara does not sing at all during their appearance in this mod, opting only to attack Boyfriend directly.
- This makes them one of the only SERIOUS opponents to not sing at all in at least one of their songs, as well as HD Girlfriend during Breaking Point, Codist during AM I OK, and the entirety of the Everywhere At The End Of Funk cast.

Butterfly Effect Papyrus[]
Butterfly Effect Papyrus is a version of Dustswap Papyrus hailing from the AU "Canon Dustswap Butterfly Effect", created by d4nizitic on Twitter in which instead of Sans, Papyrus is the one doing the killings on the behest of his brother who brainwashes him due to his weak nature.
He was going to be in the mod with a song called EXPLOIT but was scrapped due to the creator being unmotivated to finish the AU and told the devs to not use it for the mod.[3]

Butterfly Effect Papyrus resembles the base Papyrus except he hides himself in a dark and sad aura under a large gray blanket under his ripped red cape. He is also for the most part dead looking due to what he does for the sake of his manipulative brother.

Butterfly Effect Sans wears a dark faded blue jacket which changes often to green in certain conditions. He is always under a layer of shadow and under his hood he has a cracked open wound in his skull which can become larger whenever he's mad. Unlike his base however, he is seen with white eyes even when he gets mad as they don't change.
Legacy Sans[]
Legacy Sans is Sans's V1 sprite which originated from the original Dustin' build and was supposed to appear in the mod, but was scrapped due to the fact that "it wasn't original enough and it was just an stupid idea that no one would even understand lol", as mentioned by WassabiSoja.

Legacy Sans is mostly the same as his current iteration wearing the same blue jacket with gray hood, pink slippers, and shorts, with the only exceptions being his design and style being less-realistic and that he holds a bloodied knife with blood splatter on his cheek.

Failed Promise Sans[]
Failed Promise Sans is a version of Sans hailing from the creepypasta "Failed Promise", created by magicalmysteryperson on Tumblr. He is an intelligent AI taking control of Sans who judges the player, with the AI being the result of an alternate Toby Fox sending Undertale to a different JP team to make it, leading to some unexpected additions that Toby didn't expect.
He was going to be in the mod with a song called God Complex but was scrapped due to the creator pulling the character out of the mod.
In "God Complex", he would of gone "Papyrus face", and also would of transformed into Murder!Sans V2 sprites, alongside changing all the UI to that version.

Failed Promise Sans appears as an AI hiding as the visage of Sans in which he wears his hoodie fully, black pants, and white slippers. The reason for his hoodie is to hide his true appearance as he appears as a hollow mass made of strands of bone with only his face and smile showing that it is Sans. He is also able to turn into grotesque forms, amalgamating different Undertale characters and morphing his face into uncanny valley forms.

Fatal_Error[]
Fatal_Error was a character planned for Friday Night Dustin' during 2021, before he was scrapped in favour of Failed Promise sans, who also got scrapped.
Appearance[]
Fatal Error has the basic look of sans. However, his left eye is blue, his right eye is red (which dribbles down), his hoodie is now white, he carries the scarf of Papyrus, his shirt and shorts are black with green code on it, he has a red slash on his torso, and blood is on his white slippers.
