Characters[]

Boyfriend[]

Boyfriend is the protagonist of Friday Night Funkin' and main player character of Mario's Madness, facing against a bunch of versions of Mario and other Nintendo characters after playing a cursed cartridge alongside Girlfriend, not knowing what kind of chaos laid ahead of them both, and what mysteries begin to uncover back.

Appearance[]

Boyfriend in most of the songs appears the same, having the iconic cyan hair, red cap, t-shirt with the prohibition logo, red shoes, and so on. The only differences are select filters and lighting laid over him (such as in the old versions of Powerdown and Alone) and the fact he looks upwards in said old versions. He also sometimes sweats in fear or is in pain or anger (such as in All-Stars, where he also gains a lineless style in the final act).

In So Cool, he sits in a room decked with a headset reacting to the Nintendo Direct. His poses sync with the color-changing lights in his room.

In Nourishing Blood, he appears as a caveman with the same color scheme as 7 Grand Dad. His face consists of simple dots and a nick-shaped mouth. Instead of a normal mic, he holds a rock in the shape of one. His cap also has a stylized "B" on the side.

In the remaster of Alone, he is now a ghost, being blue in color with yellow eyes. The prohibition sign on his shirt remains red and is dripping like blood, and his hat retains its red color and blue brim.

In I HATE YOU and Dark Forest, he has a new outfit that resembles Mario's classic look, wearing the Cape Feather, red overalls, a blue shirt, brown shoes, gloves, and a different hat that's shaped more like Mario's.

In Thalassophobia, he is seen reaching into the foundation with his hands in a confused/intrigued manner.

In Apparition, he appears terrified and is running away from the Wario Apparition.

In Last Course, he appears as a Galoomba with his cyan hair and red cap. His mic is on the ground in front of him due to his newfound lack of hands.

In Day Out, he has lighter jean pants and an evil-looking face, akin to the base animation. He also has a cigarette in his mouth.

In Dictator, he is styled to Secret Histories, shading and all, and tied to a bent pipe with a look of fear from the dictator himself. His old look had his eyes as simple black lines instead of circles with irises.

In Race-Traitors, he is styled akin to the animation and rides his own custom Kart which has a blue paintjob and his head as the logo.

In Golden Land, he is completely grayscale and pixelated.

In No Party, he appears behind two prison bars ready to answer Hallyboo's twisted game.

In Paranoia, he appears red with dark shading to match Mr. Virtual and his crimson world.

In Demise, he runs once more, but more fearful and in pain with visible tears on his face after he witnessed MX rip Girlfriend in half.

In Unbeatable, he appears as a polygonal model of himself similar to his opponents. He also lacks the prohibition sign on his shirt.

In the scrapped Bloopers, he was going to appear as a GMod model of himself, similar to those used by Pouria_SFMs.

Trivia[]

  • According to Marco, GF's soul was the only one obtained by Horror Mario. It is unknown what happened to BF when he died.[3]
    • However, a scrapped "Good" Ending had BF escaping Horror Mario's game, only to be in front of Daddy Dearest and having to explain that his daughter died before ultimately being shot with a gun.
      • So basically, he would die in both endings. What a loss man...
  • Unless you miss the notes, the second and third All-Stars Act 4 idles aren’t visible in-game, due to the constant stream of notes.

Girlfriend[]

Girlfriend is the deuteragonist of Friday Night Funkin' and a supporting character, being Boyfriend's girlfriend. Like him, she joins Boyfriend in the cursed cartridge as they played it, now trapped in a game full of cursed versions of Mario and co., and is about uncover dark truths behind M, what her father had done to him, and how she and her boyfriend will pay the price.

GF appears mainly as a background character in Mario's Madness. GF appears as a playable character in All-Stars Act 1 and then as an opponent in Act 3 after being killed and reanimated as GX by Ultra M.

Appearance[]

Girlfriend in most of the songs appears the same, having the iconic auburn hair and wearing a red dress and heels. Throughout the mod, she mostly appears terrified, looking up at the opponent and shaking. Like Boyfriend, she is also sometimes laid with filters and lighting (such as in the old versions Powerdown and It's-A-Me). Unlike Boyfriend, however, she is often killed and used as a puppet by the denizens of the cartridge.

In So Cool, she appears lazily sitting on her belly on a couch wearing a red tank top, dark shorts or a skirt, and long white socks.

In Nourishing Blood, she appears as a cavewoman wearing attire similar to Wilma, Fred Flintstone's wife. Her speakers are also now square stones and her face is similar to Boyfriend.

In Alone, she's a red ghost with yellow eyes holding a speaker and swaying about. Her old look in the song has her appearing distraught and sickly, being quite thin. She also leans by one large speaker.

In I HATE YOU and Dark Forest, she wears Mario's outfit, with the blue overalls, red shirt, and a red hat with G instead of M. She also leans by one speaker than sitting on three. Her new outfit in the remaster adds fishnet stockings, makes her gloves longer, a pair of golden horns sticking out of the hat and a Fire Flower hair pin.

In Thalassophobia, she peeks down at the fountain with a worry on her face, wondering if anything is under the water.

In Bad Day, she appears with a darker color palette and looking from the couch at the small Mario in front of her and Boyfriend.

In Day Out, she is also styled like the base animation, having blue eyes and wearing black lipstick and having a hold through her ear. Rather than a dress, she wears a black-striped skirt and fishnets. She also has a cigarette on her hand.

In Dictator, she is also styled like Secret Histories and is tied to the pipe with Boyfriend, with fear in her face. Like Boyfriend, her eyes in her old look are simple black lines.

In Race-Traitors, she also gets a Kart, colored red, and is styled like the animation, having blue eyes and wearing a red shirt than a dress. Two speakers are attached to the back of her kart.

In Golden Land, she appears grayscale and pixelated, held by the arms by GB from the bottomless pit. She lso has an annoyed look on her face.

In NO PARTY, she has her original design. While she doesn't actually appear during the song, it's revealed in the Game Over screen that she's right next to Boyfriend, just offscreen to the player's right.

In Paranoia, she is killed offscreen by Mr. Virtual and is used as a vessel by him, her face deformed and her hair messy, and clad in that same ominous red.

In ""The End"", she appears during the third part of the song, held by Costume. She’s greyscale like the rest.

In All-Stars, after Ultra M kills her, he transforms her into a puppet named GX. She is stuck permanently in her demon form (wings and all) and her abdomen split open with organs spilling out. Her eyes are shaded out, she has a gaping smile, and a golden crown with purple gems is "placed" on her head.

In Unbeatable, she also appears polygonal like her opponents and Boyfriend.

Trivia[]

  • Besides I Hate You and Dark Forest, Girlfriend has a unique sprite for every song that she appears in.
    • The only songs she doesn't make an appearance in are as follows: Mario Sing and Game Rythm 9, Oh God No, Apparition, Last Course, No Hope, No Party, Paranoia, Overdue, Abandoned, The End, Apparition (Legacy), Forbidden Star, No Party (Old), Overdue (Old), and Timeout.
      • Technically, in Mario Sing and Game Rythm 9 and Paranoia, she has unique sprites despite them not actually being her. She also technically appears in The End's second half, but instead of having unique sprites for her, she is fused with Costume's.

I HATE YOU Mario is Mario as he appears in the I HATE YOU creepypasta. In Mario's Madness, he's the player character of Oh God No.

Appearance[]

I HATE YOU Mario has peach skin, black hair and blue eyes. His attire is mostly based on Super Mario World's "THE END" screen, consisting of a reddish-pink shirt under light blue overalls with gold buttons, a reddish-pink cap with a similarly colored "M" on the white patch on the front and a black brim (the latter of which is taken from his in-game sprite), white gloves, and reddish pink shoes with golden yellow undersides. In the pre-I HATE YOU cinematic, Mario appears in black and red and wears a cape. If he loses in OH GOD NO, he appears burnt in a way identical to how Luigi wound up after the story.

Trivia[]

  • I HATE YOU Mario's vocals are sampled from Walker Boone, the voice actor for Mario from The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World.
  • Mario sporting a cape in the cutscene could reference the ROM hack, as unlike the original story, using the cape on Luigi was how he died rather than an accident.
  • His older sprite's color scheme is much closer to his in-game sprite in Super Mario World.

Trivia[]

  • Pico's fate was originally unknown after Horror Mario killed BF and GF. It was thought that he was Horror Mario's next victim; after all, he is still trapped in his world.

― THE FORGIVEN/Mario, Too Late.exe

THE FORGIVEN is the ghostly version of Mario from Mr. Pixel's creepypasta game Too Late.exe. He appears briefly in Overdue as an additional playable character, helping Pico fend off Mr. L before disappearing.
