A cute way to celebrate the anniversary of Smoke 'Em Out Struggle on May 3rd!
― Hazy River, GameBanana

Hazy River is a Friday Night Funkin' modification created by atsuover and Rageminer that merges Garcello and Annie into one remake mod. It counts with: remastered songs; previously unused assets; minor updates and new bonus content.

Story

Smoke 'Em Out Struggle

Menu SEOS

Boyfriend was taking a walk with Girlfriend, near the place where he sings with Pico. At one point, he comes across something colorful in an alley and goes to where Garcello is, smoking in secret. Garcello notices that Boyfriend is there, but does not mind it, and says he will let him stay or leave if he wins a friendly rap battle, which Boyfriend accepts.

After the song Headache, Garcello feels something wrong in his chest and starts coughing, but says he can go on and insists. However, after Nerves, he vomits a large amount of smoke, which forms his soul, killing him. Garcello recognizes that he overdid it and decides to finish the rap battle with Boyfriend "with a blast". Garcello laments for his death and, after Fading, fades away

Dayburn Delight

Menu Annie
On a random street, Boyfriend or Annie end up meeting, and he asks for a rap battle, which Annie accepts without giving much importance. After the three songs, it gets dark, and since most people weren't there, Annie (slightly annoyed) drinks "The Liquid" and sings it one more time, before going upstairs to a building, taking Boyfriend along to sing a last song. In the "repent" version, they just start twerking on the last song.

The Misty Dragon Of Ashton

Menu MinusG
Blue Boyfriend was taking a walk or having a date with Minus Girlfriend. He passes a parking lot in the middle of the street and sees Minus Garcello there, doing something. Boy quickly asks for a rap battle, and Garcello also accepts. Things are still the same as the original week, with the only difference being that, at the end of Release-, Garcello spreads his wings and flies away.

Funsies

Menu funnies
  • Dilemma: Garcello and Annie went for a drive. On the way, Annie (probably) asks Garcello to stop by McDeebles, so he goes, but is undecided about what he's going to order. Annie thinks it's all funny, and tries to make a wish for him, but he still thinks he remembers. The employee at the end says that his request was a sequence of beeps and bops.
  • Drowning: This song takes place after Smoke 'Em Out Struggle. Annie is mad about Garcello dying and Daddy Dearest doing dastardly deeds, so she decides to confront him![1]
  • Tone it Down: Boyfriend ends up on a street with a very familiar person as their opponent. Everything looks off, if you couldn't tell by the cardboard background. After Legacy Annie drinks the fabled liquid, they become this tall demon that probably wants to kill Boyfriend. The facade has fallen, and now they're on this hellish cliff.

Characters

Garcello

Tight bars, little man...

― Garcello, Release

For other versions, see Garcello (disambiguation).

Garcello is a character made by atsuover & Rageminer. He is a heavy smoker.

Appearance

Garcello is a teal-haired smoker with a brown hat covering up his eyes. He wears a grey/black hoodie with a plain white t-shirt underneath. He has teal pants, brown boots, white fingerless gloves, and smokes a green cigarette. The smoke he emits, including the tip of his cigarette, matches the arrows' colors, suggesting it may be some kind of fantasy drug, not nicotine or tobacco. Similarly, in Release and Fading, his whole body cycles between the individual colors. During Nerves, he states that his chest feels funny and starts sweating throughout the song. For Release, he just straight up dies, appearing as a ghost connected to the cigarette. He is now able to breathe out smoke. Meanwhile, for Fading, since the cigarette starts burning out, he gains more faded colors and has an increase in transparency before disappearing completely.

Personality

Garcello is a kind, polite, and laid-back man. Unlike most of the opponents in Friday Night Funkin' and its community of mods and headcanons, he is not evil or chaotic. As a matter of fact, he holds no form of grudge or hate towards Boyfriend and is even one of the few opponents he has faced who respects him. Garcello seems not to really care for himself, given how he knew that smoking his cigar was hurting him, yet he still chose to smoke anyway. He was rather accepting of his demise, as shown by how he died with a smile on his face after performing his last song with Boyfriend.

Trivia

  • Confirmed on Twitter, Garcello was first thought of when Atsuover was taking a shower.
  • At the end of Fading there is a short leitmotif of "Stay" from SEOS+
  • Garcello never uses a mic despite having no angry phases.
  • According to the files, "Fading" was originally going to be named "Dip". This is a double entendre, meaning it's two kind of puns at once. One, is that people sometimes say they gotta "dip" when they have to leave. Dip is also a type of drug, named "dipping tobacco".
  • This mod also has fully animated cutscenes that stray from the game's usual look, making it one of the only few to do that alongside Brightside.
  • Garcello's final words, according to a file in the files, were "I'm going to the Ghost McDonalds." This might be a reference to Undertale, when the player defeats the famous Sans in his boss fight on the Genocide Route, his final words were, "I'm going to Grillby's."
  • Garcello is the first mod character to ever speak in their song, aside from Brightside and Big Brother. In "Release", the player can hear Garcello say "Tight bars, little man..."
  • In a concept art for Garcello, it is shown that he was supposed to be holding the cigarette backwards, "like a dummy". (See concept art below)
  • During the first two tracks, the smoke that comes out of Garcello's mouth shares the same color as the arrows/notes he hits.
    • Something similar is shown in the final two tracks, where his color scheme also matches the notes' colors.
    • Same can be said about Garcello's cigarette in all 4 tracks.
  • Before the song, Release, Garcello states that his dying this way was probably better than what Girlfriend's dad would've done to him. It is said in atsuover's HOW WE MADE GARCELLO ft. @Rageminer stream, it is revealed that he was sent by Daddy Dearest to get Boyfriend addicted to smoking.
  • His mod is one of the few that have a song that isn't longer than one minute. His final song, Fading, only lasts 40 seconds.
  • A possible reason as to why his final track is called Fading is that, as stories say, if ghosts are happy with their life and can move on, they disappear.
  • Nerves and Fading share a leitmotif with "Mediocre" and "Lover" respectively from the VS Annie mod, also created by atsuover.
    • Mediocre could be considered a beta version of Nerves.
    • At 1:53 for the instrumental for Release, it contains a leitmotif to Good Enough from the Annie mod.
    • At 0:30 for Fading in contains a leitmotif to the start of Release.
  • Upon death, Garcello became a ghost of his cigarette's own smoke.
  • When Garcello fades away, he's actually still in his down pose but is smiling like his idle. It's a subtle animation that one may miss.
    • In the Minus Mod, Garcello's fading animation shows him doing the peace sign with his hand.
    • In addition, his icon fades away with him, leaving the health bar to just have Boyfriend.
    • Also, because Garcello's cigarette is part of his sprite in Fading, the cigar disappears with him.
  • Garcello in Headache is the only one of his variants that doesn't have a special animation. In Nerves, he has a cough as an alternate down pose; in Release, he says "Tight bars, little man..."; in Fading, he has an alternate down pose where he smiles at the end, which happens right before he disappears.
  • Garcello's voice was made using UTAU, a shareware version of the popular Vocaloid software, as well as voice samples from Rageminer.
  • Fading is one of the shortest songs in Friday Night Funkin' mod history.
  • His name is officially pronounced "Gar-sell-o". as confirmed by Rageminer.
  • His name comes from a combination of the word "cigar" and the name "Marcelo".
  • Garcello's order at Ghost McDonalds was a Regular McChicken, Large Fries, and a Large Iced/Sweet Tea, as confirmed by Rageminer in a tweet.
  • According to Rageminer, Garcello's favorite music group is Mystery Skulls, with his favorite song being Ghost, also by Mystery Skulls.
  • According to this Tweet by Rageminer:
    • Garcello's tongue color matches the color of the smoke, which defaults to mint green.
      • Stated by Rageminer in his stream Garcello's tongue changes color when hitting each note.
      • Joked about from Nicky, Garcellos tongue turns almost like a Jawbreaker if someone were to kiss him, It becomes Multi-Colored.
    • Garcello is pansexual.
  • When Garcello died, his soul was bound to the cigarette.
    • Garcello faded away due to the cigarette crumbling to dust between Release and Fading.
    • In addition, he couldn't go back to his body due to his soul becoming bound to the cigarette
      • This technically means he lost his physical form.
  • Garcello is a character skin in the Roblox game Arsenal, there is also a Death Effect that resembles his ghost form, he can be unlocked by using the code "GARCELLO".
  • Currently, Smoke 'Em Out Struggle has the most viewed soundtrack in the entire Friday Night Funkin' community. For comparison, this means that it has even beat Madness, Ugh and Zavodila in term of views.
  • Smoke 'Em Out Struggle is the second mod to surpass Vs. Whitty in terms of downloads. The first was Vs. Tricky.
  • In RecD's Garcello WITH LYRICS By RecD - Friday Night Funkin' THE MUSICAL (Lyrical Cover), Annie mentions that Garcello loved to eat Cheez-Its, and would always devour an entire bowl of them when he stayed with her. Important to note, RecD's WITH LYRICS series is confirmed to be its own AU.
    • atsuover also voiced Annie in "Garcello WITH LYRICS."
    • Rageminer (The original voice actor of Garcello) was going to voice him in Garcello WITH LYRICS, but didn't have enough time.
  • As of the "How did we make Garcello" Stream, Annie and Garcello's FNF appearances are no longer canon within their lore, and as such, Garcello is alive within the atsuover canon.
    • One should consider that the FNF appearances are in a separate timeline. So Garcello is still dead within the FNF-verse.
  • The song, Nerves, was originally called Mediocre as an unused song for the Annie mod. However, atsuover forgot to rename the song as Nerves. Rageminer & atsuover said in a livestream that they were very confused when putting the song in-game.
  • In the cutscene before Release, Girlfriend cracks a smile. It's easy to miss.
    • It was later confirmed that Girlfriend was so focused on the bright colors rather than Garcello dying right then and there.
  • In atsuover's "Just Drawing 4?" stream, it was confirmed that Garcello has nipples after a drawing depicting him without them raised suspicion that he didn't.
  • A common misconception is that the second verse in Lover was based on Fading, but it is actually the other way around, as the VS Annie mod was created first.
  • Another common misconception is that Nerves was inspired by Sonic 3's miniboss theme, falsely known by TikTokers as the Sonic 3 Theme Song.[5] The confusion is due to a SiIvaGunner rip of said miniboss theme, within which the melody is swapped with that of Nerves.
  • Smoke 'Em Out Struggle as well as VS Annie have a physical release album, dubbed "Hazy River" which includes all of their songs as well as a few extra on CD, Vinyl, and Cassette Tape.[6][3]
  • During the atsuover event in RoBeats, players can get Headache, Nerves, and Release as a song for 25 event points.
    • The same goes for the Annie songs (except Animal).
  • Smoke 'Em Out Struggle Plus is no longer being directed by Rageminer, this is confirmed by an announcement made on their Discord Server. SEOS+ is now being directed by VirusZeke, now called SEOS DX.
  • The planned collaboration between Garcello and Friday Night Funkin': Neo was cancelled[7].
  • Garcello has a fully functional Japanese voicebank for the UTAU program, released with the consent of Rageminer.

Annie

For other versions, see Annie (disambiguation).

Annie is a mostly self-contained girl. Starring her own Full-Week, she rap-battles against BF. She also carries in her right hand an unknown carbonated liquid with powerful properties, known as T H E L I Q U I D.

Appearance

Annie has pale skin, long black hair and red eyes covered by her hair. She wears a black v-neck t-shirt, red long legged pants, black shoes with white soles and long red fingerless gloves. She wears a black beanie with cat-like ears, and she carries a bottle with sliver ends on both sides, a cyan middle, a light blue inside holding T H E L I Q U I D, and a cyan cap. After drinking T H E L I Q U I D, she becomes much larger, her fingers become claws, and her skin becomes a light blue with bubbles floating inside.

In 'Drowning'. She also sports Garcello's cap.

In her older design, before Hazy River, she is now shorter and slimmer. Her hair is covering her left eye, while in Animal, it covers both of her eyes. Her cat-eared beanie takes on the appearance of demon horns in Animal. She carries The Liquid in a water bottle, while in Animal, the bottle cap is gone, and Annie is holding it in a drunk manner.

Trivia

  • It is unknown what the liquid in the bottle Annie is holding is exactly, however atsuover has dubbed it "T H E L I Q U I D".
    • Specifically, it is not water, soda, or any alcoholic beverage.
    • atsuover has stated that T H E L I Q U I D is just a carbonated drink. However, she doesn’t mention specifically what said carbonated drink is.
  • Boyfriend's Voice in the original stand-alone mod is sampled from Bopeebo. Atsuover, though, said that she originally had plans to do a custom Boyfriend voice.
  • Her design is inspired by what Atsuover was wearing during one night.
  • "Good Enough", "Lover", and "Tug of War" all originate from actual songs by atsuover.
    • The original Tug of War appears to be about two friends arguing over the last slice of pizza.
    • The song "Tug of War" has a name similar to "Tug O War" from the Heart Attack Rampage mod.
  • The name of the unused song "Mediocre" might originate from Atsuover's original song, "Ms. Mediocre". The song appears to be a beta version of "Nerves" from the Smoke 'Em Out Struggle mod.
  • At 1:08 in "Animal," the vocals start to share the leitmotif of "Good Enough."
  • The song "Lover" shares a leitmotif with "Fading" from the Smoke 'Em Out Struggle mod at around 0:18.
  • Originally before Annie's redesign, she was a self-insert. She is now considered an original character, though that hasn't stopped her from being confused for atsuover's actual persona, which is a separate character.
  • atsuover has stated on her Twitter that Annie is transgender.
  • According to Rageminer in Hazy River Lore Dump stream[4], Annie is canonically Filipino.
  • The sprites for Annie were made using ToonBoom, making it one of the few times that a character's sprites weren't animated in Adobe.
  • "Good Enough," "Lover," "Tug of War," and "Animal" all have remastered versions uploaded to Atsuover's Spotify and Soundcloud.
    • These versions of the songs ended up being used in Hazy River.
  • Atsuover uploaded a song called "The Golden Arch March," which depicts Annie and Garcello singing a song on their way to McDonald's. This song has lyrics that can be found in the captions on Youtube.
    • It appears to be a remix of the song "Lover".
  • VS Annie as well as Smoke 'Em Out Struggle have a physical release album, dubbed "Hazy River" which includes all of their songs as well as a few extra on CD, Vinyl, and Cassette Tape.
    • Hazy River is also a mod that combines the 2 characters into a single mod with extra features.
  • Anne recently linked on her Twitter and in a YouTube video a Psych Engine download for 'Drowning', a song which shows Annie's confrontation with Daddy Dearest following the events of Smoke 'Em Out Struggle.
    • At around 1:10 in Drowning, Garcello's vocals can be heard at the same time Annie sings.
    • This song also shares its name with one of Sans' songs from DUSTTALE.
  • Annie was short in Good Enough, Lover, and Tug Of War because she needed to fit with Pico's sprites. Atsuover jokingly states in her video, "Making the Friday Night Funkin' Annie Mod," that when Annie drinks T H E L I Q U I D, she becomes taller, and her hair covers her eyes. Her height in Week 5 is indicative of her canon height.
  • The original concept art for Annie's Week 5 sprites had T H E L I Q U I D drip from its bottle. Atsuover stated that she simply forgot to add this detail in.

Minus Garcello

Not bad, little man!

― Minus Garcello, Release-

Not to be confused with Minus Garcello (Gubuch).

Minus Garcello is a character made by Dyl. He was added to Hazy River which technically makes him Garcello's Canonical Minus Design.

Appearance

Minus Garcello is a minus version of Garcello where he gains a large build, wearing a purple uniform and black pants, and his head and cap being green and wearing black shades and having his cigarette. His uniform has two black shoulder flaps with green spiked designs on them, similar in color to his body, a thick cotton fuzz on the back of his head, flaying upwards, and a white belt with a green "O" with spikes at the bottom. He lastly has black shoes with the same green colored accents and white soles. He also has a small thread-like tail with a green cross on the end, which is only seen when he does his poses.

In Nerves, his face and expression become unwell like his Nerves icon, and his torso now shows a ghostly green ribcage over it. In his poses, his ghostly wings briefly sprout out of his clothes and body.

In Release, he reveals his true form under a humanoid guise, where he's a ghostly green and white humanoid dragon with large shoulder-like wings (from his shoulder flaps), a flaming mane (from the cotton fuzz), glowing clawed hands, and a large tail with his cigarette at the end.

Trivia

  • Minus Garcello flying off at the end of Release- is referred as a "dip" in the files. This could be a reference to Fading's original name, which was also Dip.
  • It's somewhat hard to notice, but Minus Garcello's voice sounds slightly different than original Garcello's voice, this is easier to notice in Release- though.

Legacy Annie

For other versions, see Annie (disambiguation).

Legacy Annie is a character made by atsuover. She is based on Annie's old design and was added to Hazy River. But there's more to her than it seems.

Appearance

Her appearance is based on the older design for Annie, however off-color. She has light gold-tinted skin, red square eyes, and green-blue sharp long hair. She wears a catlike off-black beanie, an off-black shirt, red pants, red long fingerless gloves, and black sneakers with off-white soles. She has a purple microphone in her right hand and a carbonated bottled drink in the other one.
Halfway into her song, she drinks The Liquid. In her demon form, she grows to be much taller and slender, having a now circular eye, an animal-like nose, horns protruding from her now normal beanie, and a gigantic grin. Finally, she is holding onto a pink microphone, that of which seems to be hers.

Trivia

  • Legacy Annie's monster version is based on rejected designs for Liquid Annie from early 2021.[9]
  • Likewise, the song name "Tone it down" is most likely a comment for the artist to, as stated earlier, tone down the design to a much less scary level.
    • Another possible reason for her song being called 'Tone it Down' could be in reference to an update to the original 'VS Annie OC Week', where the update that made Boyfriend have more solo sections is called 'Tone It Down, Annie!'
  • For some reason, Legacy Annie's monster down pose alternates to a few frames of their left pose when viewed in the character editor.
  • All of Legacy Annie's poses are based off of the old poses for the actual Annie but more exaggerated.

Hailing from Friday Night Funkin' Minus.

Appearance

Blue Boyfriend appears to be the same as how he does in Friday Night Funkin' Minus he is shown to have a different design, wearing a different outfit.

McDeeble's Employee

Welcome to McDeebles! What can I get for you today?
― Employee, Dilemma

The Employee is well... an employee of McDeeble's. A parody of McDonald's (Garcello's favourite fast food place). Nothing much to say other than him saying some cool and wacky quotes during Dilemma.

Appearance

In the mod, he is literally speaking through an intercom next to Garcello's and Annie's car. His icons show the McDonald's logo with a McDonald's hat and a mic which resembles IRL McDonald's workers' attire.

Daddy Dearest

Daddy Dearest is one of the main antagonists of Friday Night Funkin'. He is Girlfriend's dad, who does not really approve of Boyfriend. In the mod, he is the one that made Garcello take the cursed cigarette (which resulted in Garcello's death). In Drowning, specifically, Annie is unhappy with his dastardly deeds and killing Garcello, resulting in a confrontation with each other.

Appearance

Daddy Dearest has plum hair and mixed pink skin. Daddy Dearest also has pointy ears, red glistening eyes and has a black overcoat.
