Hit Single, also known as Hit Single Real, is a mod directed by Sturm/Churgney Gurgney. It features Sturm's self-proclaimed "Hit Singles." It contains several songs featuring several opponents with more to come in the future.
In the "Subterfuge update", a platformer called Garn47 was added and would be unlocked after beating Silly Billy. It was removed in the "carti dropped" update due to Floombo, its creator, leaving the Hit Single team and pulling her work. More information about the game can be found here.
Story
Hit Single is an anthology, meaning songs do not have an overarching storyline or lore within the songs itself. While the story of some of the songs are shown within the songs themselves, sometimes there is a background context missing or zero context at all. This section will be used to explain the context of some of the songs.
There are a few exceptions to this theming, however. Immutable Boy appears to serve as a prequel song to Silly Billy, and both EXE and Psycho Mantis have two songs in the works.
As the entire existence of reality is dissipating due to Lord X's vessel rotting, he then says his goodbyes to Boyfriend. Lord X expresses his sorrow due to losing his favorite vessel, while being grateful to regain a new vessel.
In the end, Lord X expresses himself being a "part of" Boyfriend during the final seconds of existence, then finally fading away.
"Real X" has escaped from the digital realm and entered the real world. He seeks to kill his creator, JoeDoughBoi, to prevent him from ending the storyline of the Soulless Sonic series and continue his never-ending legacy.
"Real X" manages to kill his creator, with his current whereabouts unknown.Daddy Dearest and No More Innocence were once demonic relatives, but the former betrayed the latter, trapping him in a Sonic the Hedgehog video game for unknown reasons. Seeking vengeance, No More Innocence retaliated by kidnapping Girlfriend when she was a baby, prompting Daddy Dearest to embark into No More Innocence's world to rescue his daughter.[1]
Attempting to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula once again, Plankton forged a soul-corrupting clarinet with help of the Flying Dutchman and King Neptune and gave it, anonymously, to Squidward in order to manipulate and corrupt him.[2]
Eventually, Mr. Krabs confronts Squidward, now transformed into Starvedwared, and Plankton in an abandoned house. After Darnell Wet Fart, the house collapses, killing Starvedwared.Gameplay Mechanics
TBOI-Styled HP: Ursed replaces the traditional healthbar with three hearts. Every time Boyfriend misses, he will lose half a heart and gain a second of invincibility frames where missed notes will not decrease his health further. Missing a total of six notes, not counting notes missed during invincibility, will result in an instant game over.
Invincibility: It is impossible to game over during Trichael through normal means, as the player's health is scripted to reset itself to a neutral state every frame. However, the reset key, if enabled, will still work.
Modchart: Around 3:29 in Fakebaby, the strumline shakes and moves to other parts of the screen, occasionally swapping from upscroll to downscroll and vice versa. A less intense version of this is also seen in Darnell Wet Fart, where the individual note receptors simply move up and down.
Fear Meter: In Darnell Wet Fart, the fear meter will appear. Anytime Starvedwared sings, the fear meter will rise. However, to counter this, the meter will go down anytime Mr. Krabs sings. If the player misses a note, the fear meter will rise. As the fear meter rises, a blue vignette will fade in around the screen, possibly making it harder to hit notes. If the fear meter maxes out, then whenever the player tries to hit a note, it will cause a game over.
Mania: Tri-Torial completely overhauls the UI and gameplay of the song to have the same mechanics as another rhythm game called Sound Voltex, adding three new types of keys; a cyan left knob, a pink right knob, and an orange bar. Their keybinds are the S key, L key, and spacebar, respectively.
Health Drain: In Silly Billy, the health bar will drain when Yourself sings. In Darnell Wet Fart, the health bar drains automatically, with the rate of the drain being dependent on how full the Fear Meter is.
Trivia (General)
- Hit Single's logo, main menu, and UI layout draw heavy inspiration from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.
- In Conan's game, trying to get above the map at the beginning triggers a scrapped jumpscare screen (made by Falsecow_) from the Vs. Sonic.Exe mod to play.
- Hit Single has a track record of leaving behind some odd leftover files, such as a Garfield modpack icon and a spritesheet of Brody Foxx (the "Yo Mama" guy), which have since been removed).
- Hit Single was the first mod to have its own 3D platformer with in-game songs that can be unlocked as players progress through the game.
- Silly Billy has become Sturm's most-viewed song a week after its release and one of the most viewed Friday Night Funkin' songs period (excluding covers), gaining over 20 million views.
- To put that into perspective, Legacy, Sturm's previous most-viewed song that was made for Friday Night Crunchin', had amassed 1.3 million views after two years, which Silly Billy surpassed in a week.
- PhantomArcade complimented the mod after recognizing the song's popularity.
- The song has also been acknowledged by several famous faces normally outside the Friday Night Funkin' community like Saltydkdan, Coda, EvanTube, Alejandro Saab, and Dawn M. Bennett.
- PhantomArcade complimented the mod after recognizing the song's popularity.
- To put that into perspective, Legacy, Sturm's previous most-viewed song that was made for Friday Night Crunchin', had amassed 1.3 million views after two years, which Silly Billy surpassed in a week.
- The song Tri-Torial is a reference or a somewhat fan-made sequel of an unlockable Sound Voltex song named "TWO-TORIAL".
- The voicelines and a few of the melodies from Tri-Torial are also referencing TWO-TORIAL.
- Before Brr, I'm Cold was removed, the player could make Saint throw rocks at Inv by pressing Q. This was only for cosmetic effect.
- The "Kutty." judgement rating is a reference to the horror movie Grimcutty because Sturm thought it was funny.[3]
- The "Cool Sauce" subtitle featured in Hit Single's logo is named after the dev server.[4]
- The line "My creation, is it real?" in Trichael is a reference to a lyric lifted from the Oingo Boingo song "Weird Science".
- Pressing and holding the "9" key during Joyous will turn "Real X" into a joke sketch of himself. Releasing the key returns him to normal.
- Idling too long on the main menu will cause an audio clip to play of Baldi saying "can you stop fucking around".
- The window name will change to say the same thing and the executable icon will become Baldi's face. They return to normal upon any input from the player.
- After the "RealestBaby" update released, it was announced that Hit Single would not be open sourced going forward due to upcoming content that could be used maliciously in the wrong hands.[5][6]
- This is very likely due to planned mechanics surrounding Psycho Mantis, who is known for breaking the fourth wall and directly messing with players in his debut game.
- Silly Billy's thumbnail art strongly resembles The Fallen Angel by Alexandre Cabanal, a depiction of Lucifer's fall from grace.
- The final shot in Fakebaby features a box in the middle-right with the cursed Super Mario Bros. cartrige in it, referencing Daddy Dearest's involvement in Mario's Madness.
- There is also a small Garn47 figurine in the bottom-left corner, teasing at the game's inclusion in the mod before the "Subterfuge update" released. While all other in-game mentions of Garn47 as a game are no longer present, the figurine has not been removed.
